The motto for this interactive panel discussion is to be prepared. Having good systems and processes in place can mitigate the risk faced by all practices and in most situations pre-empt problems before they arise. We will utilise case scenarios which highlight the pertinent trends and issues facing practice managers from a risk management perspective.

Effective people management is a process. It involves recruiting the right people, having the right processes in place, providing the right induction and maintaining communication throughout the employment relationship. It is important for good performance to be recognised and rewarded. It is equally important for poor performance to be managed properly given the risk of legal claims (including bullying) that can arise.

We will utilise case scenarios which highlight the pertinent trends and issues facing practice managers from an employment perspective.

Panel Speakers

Marianna Kelly

Marianna is a senior Medico-Legal Risk Manager/Advisor for Avant. Marianna assists members of Avant through the provision of Medico- Legal advice , risk assessments and the development and implementation of risk management strategies.

Marianna has worked within the Medical Industry for over 35 years. Her experience includes general and midwifery nursing, managing large medical practices, consulting to medical practices including general practice, varying medical specialties, universities, developing dispute systems, mediation services and lecturing in practice management. Marianna has a masters in Risk Management so she is able to support the theory of risk management with the practical experience of developing strategies to manage the medico-legal road blocks. Marianna is a fellow member of the Australian Association of Practice Management.

Dr Walid Jammal

GP, Senior Medical Advisor, Avant. Wally is currently the principal GP in a family practice in Sydney, as well as a Senior Medical Advisor for Avant. He supervises GP registrars and medical students in this practice. His interests include paediatrics, men's health, and medico-legal matters that affect general practice. In the past, he has acted as an independent GP expert in civil and disciplinary matters for medical defence organisations, the Health Care Complaints Commission and plaintiffs. He was also a hearing member for the NSW Medical Council (formerly 'Board') and has participated in practice assessments, Professional Services Committees and Medical Tribunals.
